Iwa Ọjị ceremony is the Igbo practice of praying over kolanuts, breaking them and sharing them to be eaten by all present as a sign of peace. The kola is a typical multi-referential social symbol. In reviewing the symbolic uses of the kola nut in Igboland we discovered that: 1. In a general sense, the kola nut in Igboland constitutes a remarkable social symbol of hospitality, life, peace, kindness, good-will, commensality, fraternity, reconciliation and integrity. It is usually the first order of the day when hosts are receiving guests. The kolanut a symbolic instrument for peace, conflict resolution and harmony is at the heart of invariably all forms of human interaction in Igboland. Kolanut in itself is a seed like many other bounties from Earth Deity. There are two main types of kola nut: Oji Igbo (Kola acuminate) and Oji Awusa (Kola nitida) popularly known as gworo.
