Her mama can only envision the old Mexican traditional role of wageworker and housewife for her daughter, and constantly demeans her for her weight.During her first sexual encounter, with a college-bound Beverly Hills High classmate, she abruptly gets up and turns on the light, announcing, “I want you to see how I look.”At some point, all teenage girls face the pressure to fit in and commodify themselves, dumb down their intellect, and relinquish any dreams that aren’t compatible with being a wife and mother.In another scene, in response to the insufferable heat of the garment factory, she strips to her bra and panties in front of her horrified mother and bewildered sister and co-employees. Scholarships are shrinking and affirmative action programs are being curtailed, making it harder each year for students of color to attain higher education.The film’s heroine is Ana, played wonderfully by America Ferrera, a Chicana who lives in East Los Angeles with her workingclass family. Ana has lots of aspirations for herself as an individual. It is a quick read and you get a more in depth understanding of the characters.
She could follow the wishes of her mother, Carmen (Lupe Ontiveros), and lose weight so she can “catch” a man and learn to be a good wife. I regretted, however, that the script missed the opportunity to comment on one other aspect of economic reality: that the odds today of a woman such as Ana being offered a full scholarship at Columbia, as happens in the film, are probably less than being visited by the Virgin de Guadalupe. I wanted to quit high school to work in the fields, but my mother taught me a lesson. Estela is much more of a fascinating character in the play and the movie looses quite a bit of her back-story for the sake of making Ana the protagonist. Eventually she is able to persuade all the women, except for her mama, to disrobe and display their “defects” without any shame.This pressure is doubly hard for women of color, who usually have fewer options and a harder life. interest in much younger women or girls.

If you’re ever looking on further developing this blog entry, you should mention the time period and discuss how it changes plot, characters, etc.Compared to the movie, the play seemed to be the one with the more feminist undertones. López, Josefina. I felt that she was traditional, but then she deviated from norms a little bit. After watching the movie, I had a difficult time trying to place Estela in one single category.
