I’ve another few years before retirment, but you’ve inspired me to put Calabria on my list. There are no real âexpatsâ, as expats move for work to another country.
Forza Italia! Artists are getting together. Harrumph.Moving to a different country is an enormous undertaking, and you will be grateful for all the help you can get, especially if your Italian is a bit lacking at first.
It is peaceful and true to history and Italian culture. With my car we drove from Venice 11 hours non-stop. The prices are fair. I guess I am just trying to get a feel for everyday life, I have sent an email to Vaccarizzo so I will wait to see if anything comes of that. The restaurants and bars are frequented by locals all year round as they offer decent quality at fair prices. Once we retire, my husband and I plan on coming to Italy for under 6 months and then traveling to other destinations and back to the US for the remainder of the year. First of all, Pizzo has not more than 9,000 inhabitants - and second, there are not many expats. They sound very passionate and caring about their village, I think it would be great to be part of their project but we will see. If you follow #1 above, it’s pretty easy to achieve this one in Calabria. But between Americans, English, Danes, Swedes, Germans, and others who speak English, we have truly invaded the toe of the boot — not just in my area (in the province of Catanzaro on the Ionian Sea), but all over Calabria.I know some of the things discussed above may come across as negative, but I hope not overly so; as you know if you’ve read my site at all, I do love living here. We don’t have plans to get citizenship but who knows, that can change at some point. And there is this British lady who started guided city tours and developed into a travel agent. Parked nearby is an ape, the little three wheeled truck that is ubiquitous in Italy. Exclusively Yours! While more people around here tend to speak *some* English and thankfully #10 isn’t as much as an issue, everything else is spot on for wanting to live in small towns in this part of Italy, too.Look, I don’t blame you. My husband and I are opening a BNB in the piazza with several units and we are getting tons of support.As far as ex pats go, there are many Americans, English, Scottish and Russians in Santa Domenica Talao. No matter how much someone loves where they live, they have different needs and wants from yours.It’s also not as inexpensive to travel around Europe as it might seem.

Stunning beaches, ancient towns; it is all here. I know Santa Domenica Talao is not too far from San Nicola though. And even then, it can take a lifetime for a place to truly reveal itself to you Yes, Calabria has ‘Ndrangheta, and yes, it is rampant in business and governmental dealings especially in some areas.
I love it here. Most Italian food you enjoy in the US has its roots in Calabria.Excellent article and photographs about Calabria.
Young families move back into the old town centre, after years of migration to new housing estates. Then you really need to read our Italian itinerary before you book a single thing.But I got a response, a very friendly and welcoming response.

Your love for your new community is evident in your words. My role: I'd put the almond on the amaretti biscuits before they went into the wood oven. But there’s a BUT.These types of things may be quaint for a week on vacation, but dealing with them each and every day — in Italian — can be challenging. I don’t see myself ever becoming fluent in Italian at my age but I am sure I can learn enough to get by.
