Sewing Your Basket Together. You can make the basket with 2 yards of fabric if you are willing to piece strips together to make the large pieces. Square woven baskets are easy to make, durable and look fantastic, so I made this trio of baskets in various sizes for my latest attempt at controlling the clutter. Just butt two straight edges up and zig zag along the line to attach them (see above). After weaving in all the loops, pull the strips tight and trim each one even with the top loop. These are fairly heavy.You want to sew the handle areas really well as the handles will take much more wear and tear than the other areas.This one is definitely a time consuming project because of the hand sewing involved. The BASE IS NO LONGER WOVEN for this kit. You need to build your base/bottom first. I just used a simple hand stitch to hold the braids together and in the correct shape.I also recommend a good hand sewing needle that’s SHARP. Personally, I used some hand sewing needles that I inherited from my Grandmother (they came as a little gift set from Farmer’s Insurance!). They’re so PRETTY! I love repurposing items and making baskets and this is the perfect combination! PLEASE NOTE: KIT includes all materials, base, stakes, dyed reed, and antler hoop/rim intact. I used EVERY type of scrap fabric I could get my hands on for this. This became less necessary once the braid was established and grew in length.

Cutting: From fabric, cut (or piece together): 1 strip 8’’ x 47 1/2’’ (for the band around the top of the basket) 2 rectangles 8 1/2’’ x 47 1/2’’ (for the strips that go around the basket)
Trim the ends of the 2’’ x 47 1/2’’ pieces so they are only 47’’ long.You will then have 3 fabric/peltex/fabric sandwiches:Continue weaving in the two remaining loops.All done… I hope you love your basket!1 rectangle 10 1/2’’ x 30 1/2’’ (for the strips that run widthwise)
The beginning of the braid is the bottom of the basket so I used this plain blue fabric. They will be trimmed later.5. I hate adding to landfills.This is fabulous and what a great way to use up old fabric scraps and leftovers! Lightly fuse a fabric rectangle to the stabilizer of the same size. Feel free to use two different fabric for the two sides of the strips or mix it up with many fabrics. Cut the leather strip into two 1 1/2’’ x 10 1/2’’.Don't be intimidated by the leather handles - they were easy to attach with a leather needle. I bought one 1 1/2'' x 42'' leather strip (in the 12.99 package from Joanns above) and it was enough for 4 handles - 2 on each basket.10.

Best wishes, DarleneI was really worried this wouldn’t work and I’d get a big flat rug like thing, but each time you go around a corner and sew on another side, it helps provide support and stability.You can use extra scraps or even cut clothing, bed linens, or other types of upcycled fabric to make baskets.Your next step is to braid the fabric.
