By mid 1600's there was over 5600 black African slaves in Barbados and by early 1800,s over 385,000. The group established the island's first European settlement, Jamestown, on the western coast at what is now Holetown. As the cost of white labour rose in England, more slaves were imported from West Africa, especially the Gold Coast and by extension more black slaves were brought to Barbados. The main groups of slaves imported were from Ibibio, Yoruba, Lgbo and Efik, as well as Asante, Fante, Ga and Fon. At this time there were only 22 free coloured persons on the island. Some colonies have indexed enslaved persons by name under the name of the slave owner or plantation. The enslavement of Africans on the sugar plantations of São Tomé by the 1530s undoubtedly represented the first great stride towards the creation of the Barbados black slave society. He also supplied annotations and footnotes on almost all of the items which he signed and dated, the last of which (item number 6) is dated 1887 (probably by someone else). BABBS. Analysis of plantation slave lists and other primary sources that record slave names, especially within the context of genealogical relations, provides insight into slave naming practices. The indexes in the slave registers sometimes only include the name of the person who provided the information (or the ‘return’), not the owner. Compiled by the son of its last English owner, Captain George Harnage, the material documents an important period in the history of Barbados and its slave plantations.
It was later extended to include their off springs. In 1824, Harnage had the collection of documents he found bound in England. Harnage found much of the material during his visits to the plantation in 1819 and 1820. It should be noted that few of the old slave-holding planter families are represented in this list of 20th century plantations found at the Barbados Public Library. Most registers have indexes to slave owners and estates and give the name of the parish or district where they lived. Captain John Powell landed on Barbados with his crew and claimed the uninhabited island for England. They were welcomed only by a herd of Portuguese Hogs thought to be left there by Campos whose intention was to use them as food on return voyages.During the 1800's, the elite were building elaborate estates like Drax Hall and St. Nicholas Abbey, which still exist, while controlling the House of Assembly and the Legislative Council. The Spanish took the chattel enslavement of Africans to Cuba, in the northern Caribbean, in the 1540s. At the time, plantation owners were required to keep records of their slaves, and an account book, dated 26 April 1824, contains a list of \Negroes\ on the estate with their names, gender, age, value, state of health, and occupation. 81. Harnage found much of the material during his visits to the plantation in 1819 and 1820. There is an account book for the years 1823 and 1824, which itemizes salaries, purchases, money paid for physicians attending to sick \Negroes,\ necessaries for sick \Negroes,\ cost of a cage for a \Negro\ who absented himself from work , cost of a trial and execution of one \negro\ who committed a robbery, as well as the cost of purchasing candles and nails.
