Shenmue I & II - Review Images provided by SegaWhen it comes down to it, Shenmue I & II are very much games that helped define the action and adventure genre of 3D games, meaning that for some, the titles, especially the first game, may feel dated, however, for those who can look past that, Shenmue I & II both offer some of the best in storytelling, atmosphere, and charm, that even some other contemporary titles fail to capture.If I just had to pick one game, I'd say Shenmue II is the better choice, at least in terms of appealing to a newer audience, those more accustomed to current generation action games.

I had a love and hate relationship with this design but knowing the original release of the game, I have to admire how the developers were able to pull so much together in the game in the first place.As a series that has a huge legacy and influenced many games since its release, Shenmue hasn't managed to age that well. The storytelling in these games is so good. The problematic nature of the controls is the bigger hurdle than the dated visuals. There will be plenty of quick-time events as well but I find them fun for the most part. You will also do odd jobs around the town to help get some money that will also be a need for some story missions.
Thankfully this was a major quality of life change that was present in the sequel. In essence, the combat in both Shenmue I & II is very nuanced, with simple but hard to master combos and abilities that expand over time, I just wish the first game had a bit more of it.So far so good, but do the games still hold up in terms of gameplay? The other issue is the lack of consistency between the aspect ratio which jumps from widescreen to 4:3 ratio in cutscenes resulting in an abrupt transition with black bars on all corners of the screen.In the current era of holding hands of the player to lead them to the next objective, Shenmue demands you to pay attention to the content on the screen and then use the knowledge to your advantage to progress further in the story. There is a lot of effort done to make the locations in Shenmue feel real and full of people however it can also result in a plenty of confusion when the game doesn’t make it clear what you have to do next. This review will look exclusively at the first of these two games. Adding to this is the combat system which lacks strategy and feels more like button mashing at times.
Randomly throughout the game, I experienced annoying bugs like one where the game suddenly puts me in first person mode. The major culprit of this is the first Shenmue game which is simply hard to control now.The most troubling part of this port is that it suffers from some game breaking bugs. The ability to turn off all the new cosmetic changes is also a nice touch, although, it must be said, the addition of bloom feels very natural in both titles, often times making the games feel like a drama or old action movie.The first game, and to a lesser extent, Shenmue II, rely heavily on adventure game mechanics and QTE's or Quick-Time-Events, something that now, is common practice in many action titles. So much so, that the first game ends up feeling a bit like an extended intro, with tighter, more confined spaces, in contrast to Shenmue II's much more open-ended and less linear world.As far as I can tell, character models and other geometry seem to be the same assets that were available on the Dreamcast and Xbox (Shenmue II seems to be based on the Xbox version), cleaned up, with anti-aliasing and the ability to play both titles in widescreen, with new bloom and lighting effects added in for good measure.
When it comes to Shenmue II, like the original, I only briefly played the game on Xbox, which thankfully had the benefit of component output, however, due to never finishing the first game, my time with the second game was short. 4.7 out of 5.
It was also considered the most ambitious game of its time and this shows even now.Visually speaking, this is the most obvious change that has not worked out well for the remaster.
