From start to finish, Planet Earth II’s 4K/HDR/wide color presentation feels like a five-hour demo reel for the future of television. Not with the TVs, I hasten to add, because they were very nice.That said, there are a couple of issues for the nitpickers.It’s all too easy to point out how you can count the scales on a Komodo dragon. Sometimes the camera tracks across a sun beam, and in those moments you’ll end up squinting, just as you would in real life.
It clears the area of bright leaves, and then stands in the sun to maximise its visual impact.On the technical side, what you get on both the 4K Blu-ray and the accompanying standard Blu-ray is a DTS HD MA 5.1 soundtrack. The slowed-down shots of stormy weather show off the shifting levels of energy within individual lightning bolts.The point of this preamble is that hopefully you’ll get my full meaning when I say this: the 4K Blu-ray of Planet Earth 2 offers the most beautiful, enchanting Ultra HD footage I have ever seen.You can make out the fine specks of dust kicked up by a lion’s paw, or tiny bubbles of saliva popping as a caiman drools. The fur, feathers and flora of nature’s most eye-catching creatures and locations provide pretty much the perfect showcase for what having four times as many pixels to work with can do. The contents break down thusly:The audio is available in a very good English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio mix, with optional English subtitles (no other languages are included here, which suggests there will be other releases internationally). However, only very rarely do you get even the slightest sense of any picture quality reduction caused by this potential loss of ‘source pixel to screen pixel’ precision.For starters, detail levels are consistently magnificent.
