Finn was introduced as a replacement for fellow teacher Brad Willis Finn convinces Bea to spend time with her estranged family and befriend Xanthe.
Sensing Bea is sceptical, Finn proposes to her and Bea accepts on the condition that he meets her family. Bea knows Finn as Patrick and believes he is confined to a wheelchair, after he saved her from being harassed by a group of men, who then assaulted him. Elly breaks up with Finn, as she is unable to trust him, and he is asked to stop tutoring Xanthe, but they continue to meet in secret.Finn returns to Erinsborough with his girlfriend and Elly's younger sister, Bea Nilsson. Elly blames Finn for sabotaging a presentation at the last school they worked at, and for not telling her he was married when they dated. Angered at Elly for not appreciating him eliminating Bea and Gary, Finn kidnaps Aster, leaves Elly in the mineshaft and leaves after setting the island on fire.Finn later makes a plan to sabotage Susan Kennedy. Finn and Elly get back together. However, Finn pulls out of the gathering at the last minute. He applies for the acting assistant principal position, and reveals his relationship with Elly to get Susan removed from the interview board, as she has a conflict of interest. He also encourages her to accept a job at the local garage, which he later accesses to sabotages some invoices, so she gets into trouble with her boss. Having turned a tap on to assist in digging the grave, water begins to fill it, drowning Finn. He keeps notes on Susan's failings, hoping that it will help him to become principal. Finn takes a teaching job at Erinsborough High, alongside his former girlfriend Elly Conway, who asks that he resigns immediately. Finn gains access to Susan's medical file after becoming an intern for an MS trial at the hospital run by Karl Kennedy. Finn plots to take the principal job from Elly's aunt Susan Kennedy. Claudia and Errol had a son Shaun Watkins, who is Finn's younger half brother.
Finn does not pursue legal action against Elly, as he still loves her. He made his first appearance during the episode broadcast on 15 March 2017. They soon get back together. Elly runs for her life, but Finn chases after her attempting to take her and Aster.
Mills began filming his first scenes in early November 2016, and he confirmed that he would be on-screen for around four to five months. He pushes Bea down a mineshaft and leaves her to die. Finn and Elly betray Bea with kiss. When Bea comes home early and finds Finn's empty wheelchair, she calls him in a panic and he tells her that he has been regaining movement in his legs, but fell when he went out. Finn lies to the others at his glamping site that he broke up with Bea and she has gone to Sydney while sending texts on her phone pretending to be her. Susan orders Finn to stop coaching Xanthe, but they agree to meet secretly.When Finn catches Susan trying to turn him to the police, he becomes enraged, ties her to a chair and shouts that she will never be a mother to him, contradicting his earlier statement of her being the only mother figure in his life.
