Harvey Williams Cushing’s most popular book is William Osler, the Man.
Harvey Cushing, M.D., 1869-1939 Internationally renown for his preeminence in neurosurgery, Cushing returned in 1933 to his beloved alma mater, Yale (Class of 1891), as Sterling Professor of Neurology.
After doing exceptional cerebral surgery abroad under Kocher at Bern and Sherrington at Liverpool, he began private practice in Baltimore. A sequel of sorts to Bliss''s award-winning biography of Osler, and the completion of his project of describing the rise of North American medicine at the beginning of the modern age, Harvey Cushing: A Life in Surgery breaks new ground in medical biography. He was one of the first physicians to use X-rays for diagnosing brain tumours and he developed revolutionary methods of blood pressure measurement. Bliss admits that “Cushing had been a surgical innovator without being particularly inventive.” Most instruments and techniques he used were initially suggested by others.
The forceps instrument is used to grasp the thick tissues of the scalp during cranial surgery and the cannula is used to enter the brain ventricles for CSF drainage. He gave up his surgical practice after hitting a record number of 2000 removed brain tumours.
This established him as one of the foremost leaders and experts in the field. H Schloffer used the transsphenoidal approach to pituitary tumours in 1907, two years before Cushing.Bliss notes that “the rise of American medicine in general and neurosurgery in particular was a product of American Puritanism, American democracy, and American wealth.” He views Cushing's life as an example of applied Puritanism: “Cushing had been the puritan as perfectionist surgeon—no germs, no bleeding, no sloppiness, no shortcuts.” Cushing called himself “merely a handicraftsman” and privately deprecated surgical contemporaries who pretended to be philosophers.Money was not an issue for Cushing.
