Anyone from anywhere could participate, as the team provided listening tracks in addition to sheet music, prepared downloads for those with low streaming bandwidth, and ensured that participation would be free to all.Whitacre was surprised that even during the process of rehearsing remotely, in which everyone could hear only Whitacre and themselves singing on mute at home—and could not actually hear anyone else’s voice—participants still shared comments like, “Wow, it’s so good to be singing with other people together again,” as if they were all actually in the same room.I graduated from Yale with a degree in music and international studies and have been part of dozens of musical ensembles of varying global styles, including the Yale Whiffenpoofs. I currently live in Washington, DC.Whitacre felt this sort of solidarity was critically important in a pandemic, where “any single person who comes into your sphere of breathing [could be] dangerous.” He worried that this fear of one another could lead to “divisiveness and disintegration of social fabric,” and wrote “Sing Gently” to inspire singers and listeners to live the values of empathy, community, and service.
