From here, continue along the sea wall with splendid views of flat marshland which was once the Wantsum Channel. From Carlisle Station, follow National Route 7 until the River Eden, where you turn left on to National Route 72 which runs all the way to Workington. On the way you will pass the “Old Bouys” artwork, which celebrates the confluence of three National Cycle Network routes – 1, 10 and 72. Do check the way the wind is blowing before setting out, as cycling into a headwind is hard work. Take in Beatrix Potter landscapes, castles and dramatic coast roads.Notch your cycling adventure up a gear. The first section of the route takes you along the sea wall to Westgate-on-Sea.

Follow the path through the pinewoods or along the beach, past the gaily painted beach hutsto the lifeboat station and beach café. Pick up a traffic-calmed road to Low Hauxley before joining a coastal path to Druridge Bay, a stunning seven-mile stretch of sand running from Amble to Cresswell and part of Druridge Bay Country Park.Starting at Marine Parade, east of Worthing Pier, follow this predominantly traffic-free route, taking you past the fantastic Widewater Lagoon in Lancing which is a resting place for birds including herons and swans. Cycling is a beautiful thing. On leaving Alnmouth, head west on Hipsburn Road. Along the way, you can enjoy fine sea views from Barmouth Viewpoint across the mouth of the River Bann, and also over the sandy beach at Portstewart across to Scotland and the Mull of Kintyre. The route also skirts the western flank of Dartmoor, offering superb views of Cornwall and the surrounding area.
