alternative to nail knot

The use of a small hollow tube (coffee stirrer sticks can work) instead of a nail is effective. The Nail Knot is one of 10 great fishing knots included on the Fisherman's Ultimate Knot Guide (click to view). A second nail knot is then tied over the braid just to the outside of the nub making the nub function as a stopper that cannot get past the exterior nail knot and inducing tension in the braid and maintaining "finger trap" action that prevents "creep" of the mono. THE NEEDLE KNOT is a method for connecting leader to fly line when not using a loop-to-loop connection. The nail knot is a very significant fishing knot that is widely used to connect the fly line to the leader. It always pays to have a plan B.An Albright Knot  Photo by Louis CahillI agree the Albright knot is the best for the flyline to backing connection. The upside of this knot is that it is the easiest to bring through your guides, especially if you coat it with a little UV resin.

Sometimes the end of the line will catch in a guide, so I make a slight variation on the knot that prevents hangups. In the end, the best method is the one that works best for you and the way you fish. If interested in the tool I recommend, it is called the "Anglers Image Nail Knotter.

With practice very easy to tieFor 2-4 weights the nail knot is a must. It’s fairly simple to tie, though some kind of tool helps. Just take your time and test the knot thoroughly. The Uni knot is my go to in almost every situation.

I used it for several years as a beginner in the 70’s (as do many others) and it works fine but must be retied or re-inserted occasionally for wear.I liked the idea of a small nail knot for less wind resistance, so I cut the loops off my new fly line and tried this a few times. This knot can be used for terminal connections as well as tippet splicing. Albright knot for the big rigs.I have seen the whip finished and the super glued loop connection fail.
