On the rare occasion i have all night to play plus a few friends and a bathtub full of booze, everything is busted out for a very unique, and damn long, grinder of a game. For maximum hilarity i have 3 base games plus all the kickstarter stuff, plus a second copy of all the enemy boxes. I'm seriously considering it. All are good, the delve is great and can kick you in the nuts sometimes. Do you think Gloomhaven is a good solo experience?So I would jump right in to Gloomhaven if your resources are finite but if you've got cash to burn the Descent would be my pick for the most intro-friendly dungeon crawler.Descent with the app has random missions with the delve. The minis are awesome but there is really very little game in the box.For a solo dungeon crawl you cant really beat Descent 2nd plus the app. Random monsters? It all depends on what you are looking for in a gameI've never played Massive Darkness but for whatever reason it doesn't interest me.Massive Darkness is a total meh - felt like playing talisman.Now i know none of these are realllly dungeon crawls, but its rare for a boardgame to get it right. Your destination for all things CMON and exclusive content for the gaming community. Massive darkness though, I simply cannot recommend it. It was fine but nearly as complex as Gloomhaven with none of the depth and you have to drop a lot of cash for a complete campaign.Massive darkness was a complete bust for me. Pick your heroes, it generates the map, tells you what enemies to use and off you go. Unless you want a bucket of nice minis for d&d, the game is just not worth it. A campaign is not necessary at the beginning but I could consider one later on. From the opinion of people here I think I'll exclude MD then.Massive darkness though, I simply cannot recommend it. I imagine I'll play Massive Darkness again sometimes just for the different mechanics, but if I had to choose to play only one over the other, I'd go with DMD for sure. I think it's one the best dungeon crawlers together with Imperial Assault and Sword & Sorcery.I wish i would have gotten in on Sword and Sorcery. Its more tactical, has more depth and requires way more thinking than massive darkness. The app has 2 modes; one where it spawns a random multi-level delve using the tiles and monsters that you own, the other are themed campaigns FF releases from time to time.
I like the mechanics but after playing a few scenarios it becomes pretty evident that each scenario is actually a puzzle and that's where the fantasy dressing falls apart. Because if you're looking for a dungeon crawler, Gloomhaven isn't one.
The base game has enough variety to keep you going for a bit, but you get to a point where you really want to get some hero/enemy packs, small expansions and large expansions. All Styles. Descent is a fine game, though I have never played it solo. I am thinking of this as a stepping stone towards Gloomhaven while getting the opportunity to play with some cool miniatures and good atmosphere. This morning I've got Gloomhaven! And from the options here Descent would probably be the best pick.I'm playing gloomhaven solo now and it's been great so if you want to, jump right in at that level. Have not played Descent but my friends did and they S&S is superior to it.EDIT Thank you all! Amazon.com: massive darkness board. The game came so close to greatness, but fell short.
